According to The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, there were several high profile missing children cases between 1979 and 1981. Finally, the missing child epidemic became a national movement.
According to the OJJDP's Juvenile Justice Journal, in 1982 the Missing Children Act was the first Federal law to address this issue. The act authorized the entry of missing children reports into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center database. Then in 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Missing Children’s Day. A year later, the Missing Children’s Assistance Act established OJJDP’s Missing and Exploited Children’s Program.
Since then, too many children have gone missing. This national day of awareness should remind parents that they should have a plan.
